James Stephen Garrett: On "Apocalypto"

MEL GIBSON'S APOCALYPTO (WIDESCREEN EDITION) DVD
Bungle in the Jungle

Mel Gibson's feral little fever-dream "Apocalypto" is truly what you call heart-rending drama.

No, dummy. It's not a chick flick. I mean it's heart-rending if you're one of the prisoners that get hauled back to Tikal, painted bright blue, marched up the blood-soaked steps of some Mayan Temple, has his heart ripped out by the deranged & happy high priest of the Bat God, has his head lopped off, and for the cherry on top gets his headless corpse lobbed back down the ziggurat, way faster than he came up!

APOCA-SHORTO REVIEW: if you're looking for immersive, bracing & gorgeous, look no further than "Apocalypto" which convinced me American society is seriously missing that little something extra. That Little Something Extra being heart-ripping sacrifices. You know, for a good cause, like, uh, combating global warming. Check it out.

APOCA-LONGO REVIEW: To ascend to the top of the blood-drenched, gore-caked stone steps of the cinematic ziggurat of zaniness that is Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto," it's necessary to step back a bit, take a deep breath, put down that enemy warrior's heart, drop the statue of Camazotz and listen up: you gotta get down with Mad Mel first!

What do I mean by that? I mean quite simply that Mel's work has always orbited, well, Mel. Each of us is a work in progress (except for liberals, who are spat forth pristine & perfect from their mama's hairpouch), but the fun thing about Mel Gibson is how we can relate the Man to his Movies. Consider the Evolution of Mel:

Pulp Fiction Mel: the rangy, handsome Australian actor with a very identifiable Aussie accent, the lone wolf set against the arid, apocalyptic Outback of "Mad Max" and the "Road Warrior".

Big Budget Mel: here Mel got some Jesus. Wait, that came later. Here, Mel got some Big Budget Hollywood. He played the Edgy, Crazy, Suicidal, Hair-Trigger .45-eating cop in "Lethal Weapon," ying to Danny Glover's yang. Happily, Mel metamorphosed into something interesting, whereas Glover is known to whine about not being able to get a cab in Manhattan.

Serious Actor Mel: Serious! Thespian! Mel! Yes! Mel walked the boards as the most somber Prince, which gave him some heft and gravitas---and set him on the weird, somber, intriguing art which catapulted him into the bosom of Quetzalcoatl---without forcing him to find himself balding, poor and wrinkled, and still having to walk the boards as, I dunno, Polonius at age 67.

Director Mel: look, man, it's cool to be a Star: you've got, well I dunno, swimming pools. And Bel-Air. And 12-Martini lunches with production dudes. And mountains of coke on glass tables. And Spago! And LA's own Adam's Rib (for Stars): Star-Lets. But it gets old having to bow & scrape before old hairy (Jewish) crabby angry balding hideously wealthy (Jewish) movie producers.

So Mel turned out the poignant "Man without a Face," blew everybody away with "Braveheart," and really switched it up with "Passion of the Christ," essentially a snuff film featuring Jesus.

Dead Languages Director Mel: Dead Languages=Serious Business. OK, I cheated. "Passion" counts here; so does 'Apocalypto.' I hear his next is gonna be shot using English in LA.

And thus we come to MAD MEL yet again, only this time he's not walking the irradiated badlands of Australia firing shells at biker punks, but crawling and puking along the side of the Pacific Coast Highway, snarling epithets at Jews.

Anyway, "Apocalypto" is Mad Mel as Montezuma's revenge! It's a gore-caked period piece chock full of hungry jaguars, nekkid chicks, nekkid ziggurats, nekkid high priests with old man bajoobalies, a wife in a well, a rugrat in a well, extra-curricular cruel contests on the Pelota fields, and blood sacrifice.

It's even shot in ancient Mayan, which heightens the authenticity. I mean, imagine if Jaguar Paw was emoting in, say, San Fernando Valspeak? Wouldn't be the same. Besides, being shot in Mayan makes it more accessible to the largely Mayan audience watching it. Domo Arigato Mr. Apocalypto!

Don't get me wrong: it's an astonishing creation. For me, though, I think it was astonishing for the wrong reason: for hours thereafter I was in a kind of weird fugue or reverie, imagining myself clad in parrot feathers and a surplice of human ears and tongues and a crown made of an ocelot's jaw, my body painted, an avatar of Camazotz, tearing out the hearts of my sacrifices!

Sorry, where was I? Oh yeah, the story.

"Apocalypto" tells the story of Jaguar Paw and his family, who live a life of near Edenic tranquility hunting the lands Paw's forefathers hunted for generations, until a bunch of nasty, smelly, greedy Jews come along and ruin everything!

Just kidding. Actually, Paw & Fils get dragooned by a Mayan hunting party (who took the injunction "BYOB" to a whole new level) and frogmarched to Tikal for fun and games. Actually, very little fun. Or games. Primarily Death.

And so we follow Jaguar Paw and his captured tribe to the great Mayan temple city where the Mayans are living with each other, and the Earth Mother, in harmony, save for the occasional heart ripping sacrifice---ah, multiculturalism!---until a band of nasty, smelly, greedy Jews come along and ruin it for everybody.

OK, kidding. Anyway, just like "Passion," "Apocalypto" is spare, brooding, beautiful and complete in itself. Director Mel has some magic in his fingers & in his camera lens.

And more to the point: Apocalypto demonstrates that while Man in the state of Nature may not be nasty, brutal & short, Man in the state of Civilization often means having to wear your Heart on your sleeve.

Literally.

James Stephen Garrett On Ann Coulter

HOW TO TALK TO A LIBERAL (IF YOU MUST) by Ann Coulter
When saying "here Fido---good dog" is not an option

OK, let's be clear on this: Coulter's latest little round of lib-bait-&-smash isn't an instruction manual, or even a primer on what a good American conservative can use as snappy comebacks & snarky rejoinders to liberal dunderheadedness, not at all.

It's like that Alien diplomacy primer back in the Golden Age (the 1950's): It's a cookbook.

A cookbook for serving up the peculiarly suicidal phylae known as the Genus Apologeticus Liberalis Americanus: the whiney, uber-politically correct American left-winger. Well done, baby.

And it's admirably civil, compared to my own little book dictating personal conversations with Liberals. How to talk to a Liberal? Easy:

*"I'd like fries with that."
*"Medium starch on the pants."
*"I'd like two tickets for the 8:30 show."
*"Put some real elbow grease into it!"
*"No, no, you're doing it all wrong---you need to use more tongue on the sole---it's not shiny enough!"

And so forth. By contrast, Coulter's wicked little polemic cooks, bastes, boils, friccasees, and sautees the bane of American political discourse: the community-college educated leftist/statist, a creature in vast supply today (free range, no less!) running wild chiefly in newsrooms, Hollywood watering holes, faculty lounges, and in general on the blasted heath of the brain-dead, intellectually starved steppe-lands of what remains of today's American academy.

Coulter's point is not anti-intellectual or ignorantly dismissive: "How to Talk to a Liberal" takes it as a given that the Liberal doesn't want real debate. He doesn't want to talk to you: he wants Power.

Make no mistake about it: the American Leftist, or, as he calls himself (to better hide his goatish hooves and curling horns) the "Liberal", is a tireless enemy of freedom. He has had a major hand in creating the lifeless, lustreless, boil-covered society through whose grey streets the majority of our quivering population is now forced to scuttle.

Think of what we've lost in ten years: having a cigar around the office to celebrate landing the Gorfingle account, having a nice cigar over a steak dinner at the Bull & the Bear, smoking ciggies in New York & El Lay bars, driving down the road with a Fuzzy Navel in one hand and your cellphone in the other, not worrying about the Gestapo pulling you over for not wearing a seatbelt, big dorsal finned roaring American cars built from Detroit steel that belch out black smoke and make grass die---God, man, you could go on forever.

The Left has. The New American Liberal Man, the weenie-less equivalent of the New Soviet Man, has no real spine. Look at most snivelling college leftists: they'd gladly hold their girlfriend's rapist's assault gear if they thought it would save 'em a beating. But for all that, the American Leftist has been pretty macho when it comes to 1)castrating Free Speech through endless PC speech codes; 2) gelding the Free Market through tireless promotion of big government and high taxes; and 3) gutting America's strength & standing in the World.

The Liberal, then---this counterfeit free-thinker!---is a cancer. He is a threat. He must not be debated. He must not have points ceded his way. He has no points to cede.

Dinesh D'Souza has rightly identified American leftist/liberlism as an Enemy at Home bent on the destruction of truly liberal western values: an enemy that must be destroyed, annihilated, his house burnt and the smoking ruins urinated on, and he must pass off this mortal coil to the weeping and wailing of his women (or same sex partners, considering the sort of thing we're talking about here). Figuratively speaking, of course.

Ann Coulter does that. She does it well. She's a kind of right-wing common sense Boadicea, struggling against the faceless, tireless, brainless tirades of a fumbling, dog stupid Liberal establishment. And I think she enjoys herself, which is why her books, while not life-changing, are still spiky loads of fun to read.

That's why her detractors loathe books like this: Ann Coulter makes the leftists dizzy with rage. The reason they rage!rage! is not because her opinions are subversive, but because she is a clever, brutally talented little artillery master of American scorn. She uses words like a spitting cobra uses venom.

Those who claim Coulter just adds to the incivility of American debate wilfully ignore the larger issue: American politics is necessarily uncivil because they made it that way. When you start using Politics as a truncheon, don't whine when someone shows up with a tac-nuke.

MEIN KAMPF
Down & Out in Bavaria Hills

September 3, 2007

Achtung, Baby!

Mein Kampf has a nasty reputation. When it comes right down to it, Mein Kampf is a bad dog, a bad, bad dawg. If Mein Kampf were human, it would be the balding forty-year old guy with the canting glass eye who loiters down by the stairwell selling tap-dancing aphids out of a hat.

But if you step back, take a deep breath, get the mental picture of grim soot blackened kilns and miles of concertina fence and razor wire and baying German shepherds and slaughterhouses & black-smoke belching smokestacks festering and brooding beneath a slate-grey sky---

Where were we? Oh yes: if you get past that stuff, you'll be able to see Mein Kampf for what it really is: the world's most influential Self-Help manual.

Who needs Dale Carnegie & all that "Smile 'til your Gums Bleed!" crap when you've got Adolf Hitler: Carnegie wants you to wag your tail & get another friend, Hitler wants you to wag your fist in your enemy's face & slice off another rump puppet state.

Let's take a little mental inventory of Adolf Hitler, circa 1923: starving, failed artist, no money to pay the rent, wandered around ranting and drinking all day in beerhalls, and worst of all, stuck in the Munich pokey after he and the boys got knocked around by the local hoo-haw after a wild night gomezing around on the town and a few too many Heffeweisen.

And yet this guy, not even a decade later, is not only shooting hoops and slam dunks but kicking everybody's [EXPLETIVE!] around the court. Around about 1941, Hitler doesn't have any time left to kick [EXPLETIVE!] & take names. Why? Because he's too busy kicking [NAUGHTY!] to take names.

With that in mind, let's break this little masterwork of Teutonic Take-no-Prisoners Motivation down by the numbers & see what Mein Kampf can do for you---today!

1) Give in to your Anger! Your Hate will make you Strong! Whether it's building a battle station that can destroy a planet in a single blast or emptying the Eastern Marches of Bolshevik Scum, get in touch with your Inner Monster & give that bad boy a ticket to ride!

2) It's all about Marketing! Coco Chanel knew it! Tommy Hilfiger knew it! Idi Amin knew it!---Marketing Matters! Hitler proved it. Schwag matters. Gift boxes matter! Little corporate doohickeys with your logo & slogan on it---all of that matters.

WWHD?---'What would Hitler Do?' He'd make it colorful! Primary colors, baby, lots of red and black and white! He'd add chrome! He'd come up with a catchy slogan. He'd probably have a military march with torches somewhere in there! He'd invade Poland!

3) Mission Statement: KISS goes here ("Keep it SS"): make it brutally simple. Example: a) Revenge the betrayed fatherland by shooting the Bolshevik rotters; b) hold lots of torchlit parades; c) invade Russia.

Show me, don't tell me. It's results that count, daddy-o. See #3.

3) Business is War! Get in the other guy's face & scream! Make him wipe your spittle off his mouth! Yes! Go over the line! Pound on the table all you want to, but if you don't get what you want, it's time to cross the enemy's line of Death! No more Mr. Nice Guy!

Your Enemies are a bunch of Fairies! They shave their legs & go cycling after work. Think I'm wrong? Think Carstairs in Accounting has the mojo to take you on, Dear Leader? Try nailing his cat to his desk. Your patience is at an end! Exactly! Would you like a little Belgium or France with your order, Sir?

4)Shoot your rivals. What about Carruthers, the guy from Marketing? Seriously, Old Hoss, keep an eye on that guy. He's quiet, he's shifty eyed, he does what you tell him, and when you screamed at him in that P&L meeting last week he---I jest thee not---he wet himself. That said, remember: it's the quiet ones who get ya, one way or another. Hitler, for instance. Hitler was a frustrated Marketing guy, too.

It's kinda funny to think about, but had someone back on the old arts school admissions council at the Vienna School for Drawing Little Teutonic stick figures decided to let Hitler in, we'd have gotten about 15 years of bad cubist stuff instead of the Blitz & the Holocaust.

5) Strike first! Strike hard! Kill! Kill! Pick yourself up out of the gutter and get back on that Tiger tank! You think it's enough to humiliate Dimwiddy in the board room, you lunk? Fool! You've got to destroy Dimwiddy! You've got to crush him, annex his office space, invade and destroy all those little projects that mean so much to him, get him fired, laugh as he has to haul all his personal shxt out in a cardboard box---and even then it's not over! You've got to gloat, gloat and cackle, when you spot him on the street corner, down in the gutter, eating his daily ration of cat food out of a tin! Shove his face in that horsemeat! Push!

6) Never Underestimate the Stupidity of the Masses: This is a biggie. Think about it: you're German, it's 1930, and one of the candidates for Reichs Chancellor has a shifty looking brush moustache. When asked about his resume, he replies nonchalantly about being big on killing vermin.

Would you vote for that guy? Guess what? They did! Hitler won in a landslide! If he can, you can too!

With that in mind, ACHTUNG! Baby! We got a little Liebensrauming to do.
